The love of money

September 15, 2011

Hebrews 13:5

Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have, for God has said, “I will never leave you or abandon you.”

International Standard Version

Are you content with what you have?

Favortism to the rich and snubbing the poor

September 14, 2011

James 2     ISV
6But you have humiliated the man who is poor. Are not rich people the ones who oppress you and drag you into court?

Do you indignantly tell “welfare queen” stories while ignoring the massive amounts of money given to the rich? Who really oppresses us and runs the court systems?

The reluctant prayer

Proverbs 30:8-9

Keep deception and lies far from me,
Give me neither poverty nor riches;
Feed me with the food that is my portion,

That I not be full and deny You and say,“Who is the LORD?”
Or that I not be in want and steal,
And profane the name of my God.

It has been said that not one person in ten-thousand has prayed this prayer. Why not? Do we fear this prayer will actually be answered?

Are we Sodomites?

Ezekiel 16:49-50

“Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had arrogance, abundant food and careless ease, but she did not help the poor and needy. Thus they were haughty and committed abominations before Me. Therefore I removed them when I saw it.”

NASB

Does this surprise you? We think of Sodom’s sin as sexual.

Give a man a fish… and you’ll do as Jesus did

Jesus feeds five thousand.  The only miracle recorded in all four Gospels.

Mark 6:31-44, Luke 9:11-17,  John 6:1-13

Matthew 14:13-21

13 Now when Jesus heard about John, He withdrew from there in a boat to a secluded place by Himself; and when the people heard of this, they followed Him on foot from the cities. 14 When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick. 15 When it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, “This place is desolate and the hour is already late; so send the crowds away, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” 16 But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat!” 17 They said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.” 18 And He said, “Bring them here to Me.” 19 Ordering the people to sit down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food, and breaking the loaves He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds, 20 and they all ate and were satisfied. They picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve full baskets. 21 There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children.  NASB

First Jesus gave medical treatment. The he gave the people something to eat.

Jesus put no conditions on his gift.   No one had to pay or get a job. Even the boy (John 6:9) who gave the five loaves and two fish had enough to eat and get it all back too!

You have heard it said. “Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.”

But Jesus said “Give a man, give a women, give a child a fish; with no judgment, payment or conditions”.
